Getting your email over to a cloud solution

Mark Tomkins

An aspect of hosting your website and domain is that we more than likely also provide you with email services for the domain, too. For example, [email protected]

For many years, this has been fine. We set the accounts up – you get your IT people (or speak nicely to the Aubergine team) and it gets set up on your computers and more recently phones.

However, in the last 12-18 months we have seen a rise in the amount of mail services get compromised – where people get a virus on their computer and that virus takes control of their email and sends out millions of spam from their computer without them knowing – usually only becoming aware of it when hundreds or even thousands of bouncebacks start pouring into your inbox form people you don’t know.

In itself this is an annoyance as you have to get an IT company to clean up your computer before you can use your email again.

However, the other thing it does is that it has a negative effect on the rating or scoring of your domain name with Google – the ‘reputation’ value is scored and the more spam that goes out of a domain or hosting server, the higher the rating. The higher the rating, the less Google thinks of your website.

Over the last 12 months we’ve seen an increase in users’ computers getting these sorts of virus and billions of pieces of (virus initiated) spam go out of our servers – which we have to stop.

Virus are an inevitable part of using the internet – we can’t stop it, However, we can reduce its impact.

We’ve been working closely with a local IT partner, M-Systems and have devised a new solution that will reduce the spam and virus problem, whilst improving the ‘reputation’ score of your hosting server in the eyes of Google.

This involves utilising the Google services for your mailboxes. You’ll still have your email address and it will still work in exactly the same way, but with the added benefit of using the Google filters to reduce the spam, the virus possibility and overall improve the all-important ‘reputation’ scoring of your domain on Google.

Over the next few weeks you will be contacted by M-Systems to discuss how best to migrate your mail services over to the Google servers and start to improve this important aspect of being a responsible domain owner.

They will explain all the options available to you and what’s right for your business and help get your mail service more robust for the future.

If you would like to talk to one of the Aubergine team, feel free to give us a call for some more explanation.
