Written by Aubergine, the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) has published a new guide for local (parish and town) councils on website accessibility and publishing guidelines.

The guide aims to help:

• Council websites meet the needs of all users, to WCAG 2.1AA standard — which ensures accessibility to those with disabilities or impairments that use assistive technology
• Provide councils with an all-encompassing best practice guide to managing their website

The guide explains website accessibility, the WCAG 2.1AA standard and how it affects local councils. It also details what a council must publish under the Transparency Code 2015. Other helpful advice includes the costs of running a website, where to get help, what ongoing checks are needed, plus step-by-step guides and a range of resources.

The guide helps councillors and council staff who write and create content for websites – it can also guide council’s website designers, who may not be aware that local government websites need to comply with WCAG 2.1AA and the Transparency Code.
